Course Description
Posterior crown lengthening is a periodontal surgical procedure designed to expose more tooth structure for restorative purposes in the posterior (back) region of the mouth. This procedure is typically performed on molars and premolars where there is inadequate tooth structure above the gum line to support a restoration such as a crown. The goal of posterior crown lengthening is to create enough tooth structure above the gum line to ensure a proper fit and retention of a dental crown or other restorations.
During the procedure, the periodontist or oral surgeon will remove excess gum tissue and possibly some bone to expose more of the tooth structure. This allows for better access to the tooth, enables proper fitting of dental restorations, and improves the overall aesthetics and function of the tooth. This procedure may also be necessary if there is decay or damage below the gum line that needs to be addressed.
Course Objectives
The primary objective of posterior crown lengthening is to expose an adequate amount of tooth structure above the gum line in the posterior region of the mouth to facilitate the placement of dental restorations, such as crowns. By removing excess gum tissue and possibly bone, this procedure aims to:
1. Provide Sufficient Tooth Structure: By exposing more of the tooth structure, posterior crown lengthening ensures that there is enough healthy tooth material available to support a restoration like a crown. This is crucial for the long-term success and stability of the restoration.
2. Improve Access for Restorations: Adequate tooth structure above the gum line allows for better access and visibility during the preparation and placement of restorations. This helps ensure a proper fit, alignment, and longevity of the dental restoration.
3. Enhance Aesthetics and Function: Posterior crown lengthening can improve the overall appearance and symmetry of the teeth in the posterior region.
